"What is Turkish Delight? History, Origins, and Cultural Significance"

Turkish Delights, commonly referred to as Lokum ( Low-Kum), are a fantastic way of curving that notorious sweet tooth. This delectable treat has been around for over two centuries. This popular treat's origins are up for debate, but it became a staple of the Turkish empire since the 18th century.

Hacı Bekir Efendi is often credited with the creation of this mouthwatering treat, mixing refined sugar with cornstarch, creating a sweet, soft, chewy candy. He brought this delicious treat to the Sultan. He loved the delicious treat so much that he made Haci the chief confectioner of the Ottoman Palace. His creation became a staple in royal dining cuisine. He opened a shop in Istanbul in 1777, which is still in operation to this day, two centuries later!

Turkish Delights were used as a way of engaging in positive diplomatic exchanges between

different empires. Lokum was a symbol of hospitality to foreign ambassadors. It was served in grand feasts as a way of celebrating. British travelers were enamoured with this wonderful creation when they visited the Ottoman Empire.

The British delivered this unique dish back to their home country, where it was given the name “ Turkish Delight ”. The European confectioners started to replicate this treat. To this day the Turkish delight is one of the most popular candies ever created.
